Chopstick Manners

Manners pertaining to chopsticks. Some have superstitious and/or bad connotations, so please try to avoid these when using your chopsticks.

Neburi-bashi
Licking the pieces of food on the tip of chopsticks.
Komi-bashi
Filling the mouth with food, and further shoving food in with chopsticks.
Watashi-bashi
Laying chopsticks across the bowl.
Kawari-bashi
Placing chopsticks on a dish, but changing mind and moving to a different dish.
Tsukitate-bashi
Sticking chopsticks upright in bowl of rice. (Symbolizes death.)
Mayoi-bashi
Wandering chopsticks over foods wondering what to eat.
Seseri-bashi
Using chopsticks as toothpick.
Kuitsuki-bashi
Putting the empty tip of chopsticks in mouth.
Hashi-utsushi
Moving things (foods) with chopsticks between two people. (Traditionally used in cremation ceremonies.)
Yose-bashi
Drawing forward or pushing away a dish with chopsticks.
Saguri-bashi
Digging chopsticks into a dish to pick out something you like.
Sashi-bashi
Stabbing food with chopsticks.
Sora-bashi
Going to pick up food but stopping in mid-air.
Furiage-bashi
Using chopsticks to point at or beckon people.
Kuwae-bashi
Holding chopsticks with mouth.
